In yet another installment of Mary's Guide to Bipolar Chicken Keeping, I am selling the Brabanters and Pavlovskayas and going back to an all Icelandic flock.

I've gone through my share of other breeds.

Has nothing to do with the prettiest chicks. Confirmed my theory that the first hatched are usually males.

Yes, we will have to get together to get you the males. And I need to give you a Christmas present.

How young is the cockerel? He may be intimidated by Isi, and do abetter job given some girls on his own.

They are used to running from 20-ish cockerels here. And they will be having their own coops.

Mine is just starting to wing dance the girls but when Isi comes around he lays down. In a separate coop and run I think he'll be fine. I only have enough pullets to make pairs or trios. I think I'll put saddles on the girls right away to prevent damage from mating. I will be hatching as soon as I have eggs.

I just added ten more Icelandic eggs to the incubator after tossing the first 14. I don't think I'll get anything from those either.

I just realized I am not all that heartbroken about re-homing the Brabanters. I opened the nest boxes for them a few days ago because I thought they should start laying soon. I checked for eggs today and found out that they have started sleeping in the nest boxes instead of on the roosts. The nest boxes are absolutely disgusting! Yuck, I almost gagged.

I can't stand egg eaters and nest box sleepers. Never have to worry about nest-box-sleeping Icelandics unless you attach the boxes to the roof.

I thought you picked them because they were pretty! Did I even know about your theory? I may have to start paying attention. Nah!

Just finished making 84 tamales for Michael's family for Christmas. I made pork with guajillo red chile sauce, chicken with tomatillo sauce, and beef with pasilla red chile sauce. I ran out of masa before I get any made for my family. I'll start again on Monday! I buy masa from the local Mexican market because it is the best. I have wrecked it before so I don't take any chances now. I won't be able to get any more until next week.
That's ok because my feet are killing me! I have a few steaming for dinner tonight. Had to taste test, right?

Have you made the sweet ones before? I never had a sweet one till I moved to the desert... by the border were talking homemade.... there was a family owned restaurant and every christmas they would sell them by the bag full frozen. Id get pork and beef and the ones with fruit in them....

Thank you, for asking. The neighbor put a bail of hay on a wheelbarrow next to the fence and Billy was in his coop within minutes, safe. He has not tried to leave since

Eva   thank you,  I just happened to get "Happy Chocolates"  today.  My plant mentor  sent me a box of various chocolate candies , and I do the same to her.  We try to get something different, off the beaten path but nothing extreme like  bacon or salsa or hot peppers   in candy.  Neither of us should be eating them but, we don't want to hurt each other's feelings. They never tell you that friends can make you  gain lots of weight.

I am sending you all my chocolates in thought, no weight gain!
