Maple syrup comes from Sugar Maples. Other trees may have sweet sap, but not nearly as much sugar or as good a flavor as the Sugars. I think in Europe they may collect birch sap, birch trees here in the US do not have the right kind of sap.
Things I have learned so far:
- Wear taller boots (snow is deep in the woods!)
- Sap forms icicles at night
- You get a LOT of sap from one tree - tapped 6 and had 2 1/2 gallons of sap in about 4 hours
- It takes a LOT of sap to make syrup - around 100 gallons for 1 gallon of syrup, depending on the sugar concentration
Oh, I forgot. We had another kid last night, a single doeling. She was bit over due, and big. She didn't come out positioned correctly, but she made it and her dam appears to be ok.
Oh, the egg is not raw. It is actually well cooked. I have a technique for cooking eggs for food photographs. They end up actually quite rubbery so I can move them around to get the best shot. If I am eating the food I cook it the way I like it though!
Mike your new goatlet is adorable - babies are the cutest thing on earth, bouncing around on legs like springs and then they grow up and look like goats. That's life
Very cute baby. I love goats of all ages. They have such great personalities. Mine were like dogs following me around. They wanted to get in the house all the time - used to peer in the windows and tap on the glass - loudly- with their hooves.
Now if I have to give up chickens, that's what I'd like.
I can picture my life. Sitting on a snowy night in front of a fire place with him/her? On my lap, while I'm reading a book. Hot cup of tea with a four of biscuits. Two for him/her and two for me.
I would read out loud because Charlotte (that's what I'd call her) likes to listen.
