We have pods like that, but I don't think we have black widows in the suburban Chicago area.

Google says that Northern black widows are in Chicago.

They are very shy actually. You are correct, other spiders have egg pods like that too.
 
Ron didja have to tell me that? We do have some big black ones but they don't look mean. When they see be coming with bug spray they hide.
Yep!

You can tell by looking for a red hourglass on their belly--and their web is very strong and sticky. They are not that dangerous. I have lived around them my entire life and have not been bitten by one.

One of my Uncles has though. He worked as a parts puller in a wrecking yard--He should have been wearing gloves.
 
Okay you said "red hourglass" markings. I've been watching out for brown recluse spiders that have a "violin" or something markings. I don't see well, I guess I should just come out with bug spray can blazing.... Why don't they just have a skull and crossbones ? That would simplify things
