Stella's Social Club

This is my dining room table this morning - my friend Sue and I went fossil hunting yesterday in a town an hour and a half south of here, usually we would not be able to do that this time of the year as snow would already be on the ground but this year no snow yet. So we stopped at Home Depot to pick up some supplies for polishing stones and came across a $5 orchid sale. Solved some of my Christmas gift dilemmas!

Very nice!

I took Clover to her first herding clinic yesterday, she did pretty good. Someone was kind enough to take some photos for me. Heading to a dog show today to visit some friends.

And all decorated tonight.

I spy a chicken ornament! Nice looking tree.

Score! Orchids are lovely, they stay in bloom for so long! I'm still trying to get one to re-bloom for me.

That is neat. Have fun at the show!

Wow, it's pouring rain here. I'll take everything we can get.

Popped in super quick on the hives yesterday to add some food. They were not happy that I was bothering them. But I knew the storm was coming today and knew I wouldn't be back in the hives for a while.

That won't be a problem. He would never stop long enough on the laminate floor to pee!

We were feeding sugar water this week, too. We'll be in the sixties every day this week, it may be our last chance to feed and bulk them up. They are not happy to be messed with this time of year that's for sure. I started feeding them just in a coat but quickly decided to walk back up to the house and suit up halfway through. Not worth the stings. We have 17 hives here at home going in to winter. A few are a little weak, worries me. I will give them some pollen patties Monday and keep them full on the front feeders and hope they will eat enough for their own good.

Wow, 17 hives. They must keep you busy! I have 2, but 1 is the weak one that got a late start with a queen. I'm really hoping they make it through winter.

I just popped it long enough to put a new pollen patty in, but sheesh, I had about 10 come after me. (in veil, so not a worry) I did think twice about my bare ankles though.

I'm hoping they build up well, and I can add a 3rd hive this spring.

Beautiful decorations! I'm an early riser (up by 6), and I love to have my coffee in the dark with the tree lit up, and everyone else is asleep. It's peaceful and quiet.

Your tree and decorations are lovely Rinda! As usual, the kid is cute too!

You and Clover look good out there Mike! Looks like she is getting them to run around you. Not sure if that was intentional or not.

Today I made persimmon cookies with brandied raisins and a caramel brandy pecan topping. I should be arrested.

Do you add food throughout the winter months or do bees eventually hibernate?

As any good herder should be, Clover is a blur - looks like fun.

Love the trees, no tree here this year as we will be gone.
I hope you are going somewhere fun.

Since it was her first time herding, we are looking for the dog to show interest in the sheep. She did good, had no fear, strong presence, moved and controlled them. The rules to herding I was taught are: the dog controls the sheep, you control the dog, you can't control the dog until you allow the dog to control the sheep. We were working on step one. Learning if she has stronger drover or gathering instinct, if she prefers away to me (counter clockwise) or come bye (clockwise).

Nice looking cookies!
