Good grief - no common sense! Wait until a grizzly gets in someone's yard! Here in the northernmost "suburbs" of NY city (80 miles south) I have seen a mountain lion, in spite of the fact that all authorities claim there are none here. One was hanging around my chicken runs for a week before it moved on. Didn't try to get in though. There have been rumors that they have been reintroduced to help cut down the white tailed deer population which is way out of control here. So far, no dent in the deer population. Everything has to be fenced to keep them out. Fence chickens in, deer out

Porcupines actually do quite a bit of damage to the trees, and because of over hunting and trapping, they have few natural predators left. Not to mention the terrible damage they do to other animals who come close to them. There are not very many predators who are equipped to handle a porcupine.

While it can be hard to understand how predators benefit us overall, there are many ways they do, keeping especially small rodents and animals like rabbits in control. Otherwise these small creatures would do terrible damage to not only natural environments but crops as well.

It is possible to keep birds in predator - rich environments, but it takes a lot of work and sometimes ingenuity.
