I am having to buy eggs at the store.

I have ONE pullet that should start laying in December. All of my other birds that would be laying right now, the predator got. I have older birds that are all molting.
 
I think many animals have a trigger zone inside of which they will react to another threatening presence, either by moving away or by putting up a fight. Some have a larger zone than others, so when confined in a small space, no matter how many hens are there, they just can not tolerate the closeness of another male. In a larger area they may tolerate the other a little more, knowing they can be chased off at any time if nescessary.
