Ron - I haven't been able to cull the older layers yet. They just live out their days here. My light brahma is 8. My English Orp (Crazy Orp) is going downhill fast. She is 6 or 7 and losing weight, especially on her breast. She's still comfortable and talks to me when I come in the run, so I'm leaving her be.
I have to downsize. The renters next to us moved out and the owners are complaining about noise and smell in the summer. Noise is just silly since I do not have roosters. The smell in the summer comes from tomato silage that rots just out of town.

I keep things too clean for there to be a smell

It seemed like the owners did not know I had chickens even though they have been there for 7 years

Ron are you unprotected by any regulations?
The biggest issue is having too many. I am allowed to have 6 hens.

I have 10 days to get to that number. I told the guy that it is hard one me to process more than 4 in a day. He was not too sympathetic. I wonder if the person that complained understands that the chickens will be dead in 10 days? I am tempted to give her a jar of canned old hen, LOL

The answer is that I will still have hens. I won't be able to give away or sell extra eggs though.

On the bright side, I will have a much lower feed bill

I finally started on processing the old hens. I picked the golden comet that was one of my first flock. She was close to 7 years old! She had a fully formed egg and eggs forming. Ovaries still had eggs too.

She was not laying much but still could at that age.

She was very fat but in good health. I did not see any cancer so Mareks must not be too bad here.

One down, 6 to go but I will likely only get to 2 of them today.
Wow, nice old hen.

Wow what a good hen.

Ron I have not had time to separate my flock out yet, I could send you some eggs but you might get some that would be across between cream legbar and Arkansas blue. I figured in the next couple weeks I'll be able to get things sorted out, but my mom's been having let health problems lately.
Sorry to hear about you mother.
