Stella's Social Club

I love picture day! They look great, Kelly! I am loving the innocent looks on the faces of those turkeys. They want you to love them, so ya won't eat them.

Mary, from time to time, will Stella have guests on this thread ? You know maybe of the emu, or goat or Diva persuasion. Just wondering. I love Stella but, miss her homies too.

I DO love them already! They are so darn friendly!

BTW..........the massive bird in the back of the 4th picture by the 5 gallon waterer is my Olive from you. She needs to molt - her poor back is well loved by the rooster.

Nice pics Kelly! Are the Wellies easy to sex at a relavitvely young age? I got two eggs from Jim (mrheinz77) and both hatched!!

Got my shipment of Freedom Rangers today.....first round for the freezer were Cornish X....second round FRs....we'll be eating good!!! Kathy, how big are the meaties from your 4-H buddy? My largest cornish, dressed with neck but no giblets, was 6.45 lbs.....they were 8 weeks at process.

Mary, you can sex a wellie chick at hatch by the markings. Dark crisp markings are a girl, more diffuse, softer, redder markings are a boy.

Yep, super easy.

You can generally sex at hatch, but it's not 100% accurate. Girls usually have eyeliner and a defined V on their head, boys have no eyeliner and a messy V.

When the chest feathers come in, pullets will have salmon colored chests and cockerels will be a mix of red and black chests. By 4 weeks, the comb difference alone will tell you.

Thanks Kelly.....I was a bit lax and didn't get any pics the first day or two, so I'll look tomorrow and then watch and see if I'm right in 4 weeks!

A friend of mine, who took my Auburn Javas when I decided on my Icelandics, came tonight and got Boy Blue (Blue Isbar cockerel), Foa (Icelandic pullet) and Scampi (Golden Campine pullet). They were hatched together, as part of the Mahonri's Easter Hatchalong, along with Barbie (Barred Olive Egger) and Falki. The five of them hung around together all the time. I couldn't keep Scampi since she is a white egg layer and I didn't want to have to keep her penned to make sure I didn't hatch any of her eggs by mistaking them for Icelandic ones. Up until now, no other roosters besides my Icelandics have been allowed to stay because I didn't want to take a chance of crossbreeding. I'm not Kathy so I can't have a gazillion different breeding pens.

Since Scampi and Boy Blue were "singletons" they couldn't stay. I didn't want to send Scampi without another pullet for company so Foa went. I hated to send her but my other option was Barbie and she is not quick enough to live in the totally free range enviroment that my friend has for her flock. I know the birds will stay with her for life. She has a couple of other Icelandic pullets from last year in her flock and she loves them. Barbie will have to hang with Falki and the NHs now.....she'll be lost tomorrow, but I know she'll work it out.

Here's a pic of the Easter Hatchalong group preening on the A/C unit....

and hanging out in the chicken yard...

I hate to see any of them go..........the good news is that I can visit them anytime since she just lives a few miles away!!

Funny, that's just what I am consoling myself with tonight - those same words.

I just sold a whole pickup truck load of birds to my 4H buddy. Chocolates, Lavenders, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Ameraucanas, Miss Olive, and more....... and lots of chicks, too.

I can do this. I can do this. I can do this.............

Great pictures! Wanna see some gross ones?
