Before Thanksgiving, I got my hands on some fresh (as in unpasteurized) milk from a Jersey cow.  I took the cream and made butter with it.  I've made butter in the past with leftover heavy cream, but this was a first with "real" milk.  It took a heck of a lot more beating to get it to turn to butter, but once it did, I was amazed by the color.

On the left is store butter:

Yummy... Its so bright. I've never tried homemade butter. I'm sure it is amazing..

Most of the hard work is done.  Well, we still have to split it, but hey, free wood is free wood.  Thanks again Mary and Michael!  So this is what Mary's oak tree now looks like in my yard.  It took 11 trips in our truck to get it here.

And the rest on the drying rack DH built. (plus 1/2 row behind that row)  The wood on top is over 6 ft off the ground.


I'm super surprised we're not the comedic factor on Mary's blog.  Must have been quite a sight.

Well, I apparently suck at hiding things from my DH. Got busted already. 9PM last night he said, "so what did you buy that was $152?" He didn't say much when I told him netting - only that I'm not covering the orchard. Well duh, I can't cover the orchard, too many tall trees - and we don't lose chickens out of that coop. It's the lower coop that has the issue.

I have a little Coleman flashlight, that I bought at Walmart. It is called Coleman MAX, 115 Lumens LED Ultra Bright. I think it was $29. or something like that. I can even see through dark eggs with it.

I use the same thing. And if it's a really dark egg, I place the egg on top of it to let the light shine up, then place a second small candling flashlight on top from the other direction. I can see through pretty much anything I've tried.
