Interesting incubation this was. Hit 106 twice, 108 and 110 once each. Started to throw the eggs away a couple of times but figured I'd see what was gonna happen. ALL 12 HATCHED, including 1 - 2 days after the others! LOCAL EGGS ROCK!!!!

Anyway these were free local eggs from a neighbor, 6 blue/green & 6 brown eggs. Known breeds in his flock.
Australorp
Buff Orpington
Dominecker (sp)
Americauna
Mostly mixed breed roosters (very beautiful including some with Game blood in them) with a couple of pure bread Dominecker and/or Cuckoo Marans and/or Barred Rocks. There are NO Aricauna/Americauna Roos in the flock.
Otherwise unknown origins on hens & roos with possible black star & no RIRs.

Please let me know if you recognize the breed of any of these chicks or can guess as to possible heritage. Any sexing thoughts would be appreciated also though I'm guessing useless on mixed breedings like this.

Thanks & Schlante,
Phillip

Ps whatever they are I think they're quite colorful and will look good in the monotoned flock I currently have!

Chick #1 - Cinnamon face, cinamon tones on body, grey body yellow legs
Egg color Unknown - Either Brown or Easter Egger

100_0699.jpg

Chick #2 - Black with cinnamon face, white spot on top of head, & brown/yellow legs yellow/orange beak
Egg color unknown - suspected Brown
Isn't the white spot on head indicative of certain breeds, Australorp?

Chick #3 - Black with white spot on top of head, yellow/brown/grey legs, dark beak
Egg Color unknown - suspected Brown
Isn't the white spot on head indicative of certain breeds, Australorp?

Chick #4 - Yellow body with mohawk marking on back of head plus yellow legs. Otherwise unmarked
Egg Color - Brown Thoughts I'm guessing he's just mixed parentage perhaps a Buff Orp mom & game influenced dad

Chick #5 - Obvious Americauna influence Yellow legs & Easter Egger stripes with yellow fluff elsewhere
Egg Color - Blue/Green

Chick #9 - Reddish yellow chick, more so than RIR chick I've hatched in the past, with yellow feet & Beak

I'm guessing this is a heavy Buff Orpington influence

Chick #12 - Dark Brown and mostly black coloring with brown/yellow leggs with yellow reddish brown beak
Egg Color - Blue Green comes from Americauna, but very different from the greyish blue Americauna hens (no Americauna roos in the flock)

I agree. They're too much of a mix to really determine an exact breed. None of them would be pure breds (except maybe if you just happened to have the Dom roo and the Dom hen get together).

It'll be interesting to watch them grow up and change into beautiful birds.

You have a bunch of EE and or Dom crosses--look at all the flat combs! Now, a Dom has a rose comb (if by "dominecker", you mean a real Dominique and not a BR or BR cross like some folks do) and an EE has a pea comb (usually). I'm saying EE since true Ameraucanas are not common, and if they're hatchery birds, definite EEs.

There are no pure Barred Rocks or Dominiques in that batch. Look at the combs, not the colors of the chicks. They may have to get larger to know if they are pea combs or rose combs, they're too small now.

Honestly, you can't find out the exact crosses of those till they're older, and even then, maybe not. Heinz 57 all the way.

I realize there's probably not a pure-bred one in the bunch. However I'm not sure of what all is in the parent flock, I by no means provided a complete list. As for the 'barred' styled roos he told me what he had 2 of the 3 I listed above, just can't remember which ones, probably rocks & marans. I was just wondering what traits yall might identify in the various chicks which might hint at possible parentage. For example the white dot on the head as referenced by OSUman. 4 or maybe even 5 have a wht/light colored dot on the head. One thing's for sure those were some tough eggs!

I was amazed with the number of brown/grey/odd colored legs. I only saw a few of his stock while visiting with him in the side yard while they were free ranging. Others he just mentioned having as we spoke. No matter I'll be happy if they produce eggs and I get a setting hen or 2.

Off to look at chick pics at the henderson chicken page!

Schlante,
Phillip
