I have a Speckled Sussex rooster who will be 6 months old next week. My girls, who are the same age, have been laying for about a month now. So far, I have not gotten any fertile eggs. Could he be sterile, or is he still young and just missing the mark, or something like that? Thanks!

Yes, we need to know if you have seen him "do his thing".... If not then, no... he is not sterile just not interested

But, if you have seen him, then yes, he may be sterile....

ETA: Oops.... you posted while I was working on my post...

When he mounts your hens does he actually move his tail and mate them?

Just asking because I have a SLW and he will mate once out of every 10 times he mounts a hen. The other times he just stands on their backs looking around. Cant' figure out exactly what he's up to?????

Sometimes the hen's feathers have to be trimmed for the rooster to be able to reach his target, too. How fluffy-butted are the hens?

This is a good question. I'd watch them and make sure. If your looking at them from behind you should be able to see both vent areas!!
