Today I found these little discusting bugs on my girls...stick tight fleas. Yuck!! After much research, I've started this treatment. Using a q-tip, I carefully saturated the heads & necks of my 5 hens using Adams flea & tick spray, I also dilluted Permectin II & sprayed down their bodies. I completely cleaned the hen house, roosts & lay boxes, then I sprayed down everything including their run with Permectrin II. After hen house dried & aired out, I put fresh shavings back in lay boxes. I will dispose of all eggs for the next month or so due to the toxins in all of that stuff. Hope I havent poisoned my girls...I'll keep y'all posted on results.

Adam's flea and tick would have probably done the trick. The spray usually goes into the air and coop naturally. Hope your hens will be okay.

Looks like they've started dropping off already! Hope theyre gone for good!

This morning fleas are gone. Still a few dead ones attached so I'll get my tweezers & pull them out. The girls are swollen & red around their eyes so I'll try my best to clean them & put some antibiotic cream on. They seem to be in better spirits without those blood suckers attached! Some one told me about Cedercide spray, so I'll go online today, buy it then spray down my yard & coop. Stay tuned ...,.

Treated with Vaseline & frontline — using DM in coop, hoping to avoid harsh chemicals

Glad you were able to treat your chickens.

You mention that you used Frontline on the chickens, but don't want to use chemicals to treat the coop? Frontline contains Friponil, which is a broad spectrum insecticide.

Sadly, DE (Diatomaceous Earth) is not effective in treating an active external parasite infestation. DE may be beneficial in dust bathing areas, but can be irritating to a chickens lungs. It would be better to use an approved insecticide that is approved for use in poultry to treat your coop. Permethrin based sprays or dusts are available online and in most feed stores. You can also use Spinosad, I've heard that it works very well too.
Here's a few products you may want to look at: http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1151513/pesticides-approved-for-poultry
