Had a friend bring me a day old chick yesterday that could not bend the knee. It was partially bent but could not be straightened or bent further almost like it was fused. Doesn't appear to be slipped tendon or splayed leg that I have seen in the past. The only other thing to mention is the back of the hock almost has a bruise on it. Chick was hatched on day 21 like this. Eyes were not opened yesterday but are now today. Drinking but not eating. Ideas?

not much to say really especially as it was not a chick of your own which means you have already decided against what most of us would have already considered and done.
If you believe the chick could be viable in the near future and lead a happy active life then give it the best of care and help it feed. Just remember this is about the quality of life of the chick not your quality of life. The more you fight to keep this chick the more attached you will become and at some point you will have to ask yourself some very hard questions with no easy answers.

Maybe as a last shot I would try vitamins in the hope that its lacking something vital but with out a xray there's no telling what's happened to the leg and if it will recover or if its deformed to a point that it can never be used. The chick is going to try to gain weight soon which will add to stress on the leg. Animal husbandry means that you have to take care of the animals before mother nature does.

i hope the chick is at least eating at this point even if you are having to assist.

    best of luck

It's the bent leg. Does not appear to be slipped tendon. I have dealt with that. Also not like splayed leg I've seen.
