*Still Need Help* What's Wrong with my Roosters Foot? See Pictures

I know I read something about a year or so ago that a chicken can develop spots on their legs because of Mareks.. HOWEVER.... I have Production red x speckled sussex as well as barred rocks that all have at least a few spots... All of them walk normal and are very healthy.. I ruled out Mareks when one of my girls died quite suddenly and I did a necropsy.. I found absolutely nothing wrong with her (sent pics of my findings to Mississippi State) and figured out that she came off the roost and ran head first into the nest box, killing her instantly! Unless they are acting strange or the spots get worse, I wouldn't worry too much about it..

I did notice that it was lile the redness on my roos legs/feet.. I noticed them as they reached maturity... I never saw anything on their legs and feet when they were chicks... May just be ones of those "signs of age"??

I don't know if anyone else has said this yet...those feet spots don't look like frostbite to me. Frostbite that I've seen has started with feet that are visibly swollen, and red or purple-red in color. My guess is that pecking or something else, has caused bruising. I've seen those dark spots on my yellow-legged hen's feet before (I've never seen them on my dark-legged hens). Those dark spots never caused her to act uncomfortable. And they seemed to eventually move or disappear.

Don't worry, unless the feet and legs start looking inflamed, or if your roo starts acting like his feet are painful.

I can't honestly say what the green is either unless someone is pecking him and it is bruising. Keep a close eye on it and if it starts to swell or bleed or anything else out of the oridinary then post again, but I don't think a good soak in some warm water and epsom salt would hurt.. then get some blue kote before putting him back with the girls to cover the spots up just in case they are pecking at him, my one rooster let some of the girls peck his wattles till they were bloody never did figure that one out.. hope this helps..

After reading the replys, thank you, it dawned on me

I think the green spots that are up on his leg are bruises. Duh! My girls did not welcome him with, dare I say, open wings. He had to fight for his position in the flock and he did so with his feet. They all ganged up on him and he fought them off by using his feet as weapons. I would think that their beaks did some damage. It could be that the bruises are just now starting to show up on his leg (there are some little round spots, as well, on the inside of his toes). As far as the black, I will be keeping an eye on that. It is very rough feeling. I will soak his feet in some epsom salt and see if that might help. I do know that he had scaly mites at one time when he was at the rescue. So, I will watch for that. I don't see any problems on the bottom of his feet. They look good.

Well, I probably panicked more than I should have. I just know that he did not have those darn spots when we got him.

Thanks again.

P.S.

Miss Lydia, I hope I wasn't too much of a pest.

I would also think that's just foot coloring...I've seen many a rooster (usually with yellow legs) that have those green spots on their scales. Alot of times I see this when I'm attending poultry shows and am walking around. IMO, if show judges don't DQ birds with this and the chickens don't seem to be in pain, they're fine.

If you think that they are just bruises, do what you feel necessary.

If however, they don't go away, don't worry.

well I am going to a poultry show this Sat. so you can be sure I will be looking for green spots on yellow skined chickens. I'll post if I see any.. and you are not a pest, just a concerned chicken mama.

I had no internet yesterday...it would totally make sense that they could be bruises. My poor banty gets picked on sometimes. I think the mystery may be solved! I wonder how long it takes for them to go away?
