This is a chick that was hatched from a mis-labeled egg in my daughter's kindergarten class. It's most assuredly not a barred rock. We were all thinking Buff Orpington, but now I am not so sure. I know they go through an ugly phase, but this one seems very, very different. Below the new one, is pictures of our other BO at the same age. Are we still thinking BO?

New one...

And this is Chocobo the pullet at the same age:

In my first batch I had five roos and one pullet. One roo feathered just like that. In the batch I am brooding now I have seven pullets and two roos who are feathering like that. I'm not sure what causes the slow feathering in some of the roos...

I agree with Jeanna. That's definitely a BO, but it looks like a roo to me too. If it is, at least you'll have a pair.

I was already fairly certain it was a he. We have two that we think are roosters. We named them Smith and Wesson. I just didn't realize that they could feather out so differently. Both of the roosters are a little flighty.
