I live near a lake -- and we get snakes too. Yep, I've been bitten.

Here's what old folks recommend: if that pond is yours, put a pig out there. Pigs eat snakes like spaghetti, even the poisonous snakes. Pigs will eat birds, so put the pigs out there to clear out the snakes while you keep your birds safely in another area away from the pigs and snakes.

Also, put golf balls around the shelters and in the nesting boxes. The snake will swallow golf balls and die.

Another thing we used to do when fishing on the river at night was put a dead snake just outside the area where our campfire -- and all of us -- were. There's nothing like a dead snake when you need to run off other snakes.

We have a guy who is a "snake chaser" in town. He doesn't kill the snakes, but he does run them off by making a noise at them they don't like.

Hope this helps. And be careful walking around. I was bitten on the foot at night.

Im a defiantly trying that golf ball thing.
Cant get a pig though

If you want to catch it and kill it i suggest about a 4ft string(heavy) A dead mouse, and a rod. Take the string and tie one end to the rod and drive it into the ground. Then at the other end of the string tie the dead mouse. ( put where you have seen the snakes). They end up swallowing the mouse but can get away because the string it attached to the mouse. And there ya got ya a snake.

You have to get too close to the snake to kill it with a machette. And a hoe is ackward to chop with. Best bet is a shovel, preferably a flat-bladed sharp-shooter. It'll take the head off a snake with a single strike, unlike a hoe that takes multiple chops.

Haven't had any copperheads in the coop, although I've had my share of 4-foot rat snakes.

I heard that very fine oyster shells cuts their underbelly but don't know how true that is.

I live in the UP of MI where their is no poison snakes LOL well at least not yet but if we give our DNR some time I am sure they will decide to do that.

I am of no help in this situation.. I am a big time snake lover.. My corn snake's (pet) tank is right next to our bed. Though I am respectful (not really fearful) of wild/poisionus snakes..

I love snakes( friend has a 7 ft python or boa, cant remember which that i babysit sometimes), just not when one puts my babies in danger. Ive lost rabbits to them and have no intention of losing my ducks as well.
