I live near a lake -- and we get snakes too. Yep, I've been bitten.
Here's what old folks recommend: if that pond is yours, put a pig out there. Pigs eat snakes like spaghetti, even the poisonous snakes. Pigs will eat birds, so put the pigs out there to clear out the snakes while you keep your birds safely in another area away from the pigs and snakes.
Also, put golf balls around the shelters and in the nesting boxes. The snake will swallow golf balls and die.
Another thing we used to do when fishing on the river at night was put a dead snake just outside the area where our campfire -- and all of us -- were. There's nothing like a dead snake when you need to run off other snakes.
We have a guy who is a "snake chaser" in town. He doesn't kill the snakes, but he does run them off by making a noise at them they don't like.
