Definitely rethink your run and Coop.

It has only been this week that they haven't been able to free range. The pen is plenty big, but I guess I could put more in it for entertainment. They have a swing, a table, five different levels of roosts and a tree trunk, but I guess they need more entertainment. They did get out today after my kids got home from school.

Maybe try emptying an egg and putting mustard in it I hear it stops them

That will just make a different kind of mess in the nests.
Fake eggs in the nests would be better.

Knowing more about....
-your flock size(numbers, ages, genders),
-your coop(size in feet by feet with pics),
-and what and how exactly you are feeding,
might offer clues to if there is a solvable problem.

Why would too much protein make then want to eat eggs?
How much protein is too much?

Another thing to try is pinless peepers.
I used it on a feather picker and she was cured after 6 weeks.
Definatly tell us about size of flock and space avaliable.
There are also some pretty good boredom busting ideas on this site.
I understand winter weather can be tough.

I do have fake eggs in the nests, both ceramic and wooden, both white and brown.
When I am home, I check nest multiple times daily, but work days, not until I am home, and again before lock down.
I had not seen any egg breaking until the stupid racoon invasion. Fortunatly, only eggs, no dead or injured birds, but I think he taught them that eggs are yummy by leaving scraps. I have never had this problem before. Not this past year with all my new birds, or in the early 90's, or early 2000's with my other flocks. We did have an egg eating dog in the 90's though.
With all the babies I just bought, the lack of buyers for eggs in this inundated market and the frustration factor, I'm thinking the freezer is looking like a solution. I will be watching them closely this weekend to determine exactly which one/ones are the guilty parties and how many are enjoying the event by theft of broken egg. I just pray it's not the Buttercups. They are special pets and our tamest chickens. Not a lot of chance of TSC having more of them. I haven't seen them at TSC before or since getting ours last spring.

I have two dish soap, and two mustard eggs ready for tomorrow. I'm moving the two broody girls to a different coop to keep from having their nests ruined, then introducing the nasty eggs, maybe at intervals throughout the day. Should be fun (and depressing) to watch.

Update: set a mustard egg on the ground while I "checked" the nests. Three girls came to check it out right away. Two started pecking it at the hole I had started on top. Another ran over, went into a nest and started pecking wooden eggs. The three left the egg without breaking it. I picked it up and will try it again tomorrow. Maybe the fake eggs are helping. They can't feel good to peck.
