Stinking MUTT

There was a Lab Chow mix that opened our chainlink fence gate with it's nose, pushing the latch upwards, that attacked one of our chickens, Luckily we got there in time. the dog was afraid of people so I ran after it and yelled at it and it ran directly to the gate and tried to open it with its nose. My mom let it out. The chicken had only lost feathers, but the poor thing was in the chicken coop in a corner trembling. I took her inside and wrapped her in a towel because she had dog slobber all over her. After an hour she recovered from her shock and I put her outside. Throughout the day the dog was circling around our property. The next day I was determined to catch it, as stupid as it was, to try to catch a dog with your bare hands. It was comfortable around other dogs so I took my dog out and it was interested in him. I did not catch him that day, but the next day two other roaming neighborhood dogs, who are not afraid of people, were with it and came up to me. I brought my dog out again and while he was out all the dogs were trying to greet him. In the middle of this dog frenzie, I caught the dog by it's choke chain, which should not be left on a dog, and then tied him to the porch. Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer. Called animal control they called at 9 a.m. and said they would come get him. they got him at 6 p.m. I was sad about the dogs fate because it is not his fault. If his owner would have kept him in his backyard then this would not have happened. Dogs cannot control these things, they really don't deserve it, but that is the only way to stop these things. There is no such thing as a bad dog, only a bad owner.

So sorry to hear about your family's chickens, but glad that you got the dog! Hopefully they won't try and cause you any trouble.

I just shot at a HUGE black dog in the middle of our round pen. Never seen him before, and we know everyone. My little Boston Terrier was hanging from his neck and he didn't even notice. Luckily she came running when she saw me with the shotgun. I'll have to sit and wait for it and hope it doesn't complete the job next time.

People need to learn to keep their dogs up or they will get shot when they attack our animals on our property.

Next time, I don't think I'd go tell the neighbors. People are crazy.

my neighbors had 2 dogs that used to eat our chickens. i caught the dogs several times and brought it back to the neighbor. told the neighbor i would haul the dogs off (i don't like to kill animals) the next time i caught them in my yard. the very next morning 5:30am the dogs were back in my yard chasing my chickens. i caught 1 of them and put it in a dog carrier and the other ran home. i loaded the dog i had up in the van and went to the neighbors house. i knocked on the door for 10 minutes and nobody would answer so i politely grabbed the other dog off the porch and loaded into the van too. i hauled the dogs 2 about an hour and a half south of where i live and found a small neighborhood made sure i didn't see any poultry or livestock around and droped them off on the side of the road. they are probably someone's pet by now because they were very friendly dogs (to people that is). i just couldn't afford to lose anymore chickens. i lost 20+ chickens to those dogs in a matter of 3 days.

SOOOO Sorry !!!! What a pretty young lady and love those dimples !!
VERY pretty bird too ! Such a shame ...but good for you and the gun. Keep your dogs home where they belong if you REALLY care about them !
We don't have a leash law where I live...small town. My dogs never leave my chainlink fenced yard. But that's because I CARE about them !

Good for you! You did the right thing and I'm glad you left the dog with the bird in it's mouth. The owners saw what it did and in the act. Maybe next time they will try to keep their next dog contained better. The picture of your daughter and Friendly is certainly beautiful! Hugs to all.

Thanks everyone. Your kind words are very much appreciated. I can't believe the e-mail I just got from some guy...

I;ve heard alot of wisdom in your past words speaking on terms of conservation of land, management and proper use and admonishing people for doing really stupid sheet.

To shoot a dog over shredding a chicken?

Respect lost from my camp.......A dog deserves to be shot when it bites someone or is aggressive towards people. Not a chicken. They're supposed to have prey drive for birds and a chicken killer can be de-birded in one session with an e-collar...not a rifle.

Sorry your girls lost a chicken and I'm sure they loved them as all kids love creatures big and small. No justification in my mind. The dog isn't running cattle, sheep or horses and probably has no interest in such.

This is how I responded....
I obviosuly don't want respect from your camp. You explain to my daughters why one of their favorite pets is shredded, and why that life is worth less than that trespassing dogs. You also explain to me why livestock on my property that I have taken measures to protect is worth less than a marauding animal. Can a neighbor walk into your home and steal from your family and you'd smile.

Then I attached this picture.

I'm sorry y'all lost your chickens. As to the person who emailed you . . . as much as I disagree with them, I think it was very good of them to email you rather than making their dissent known on your thread, where it would be sure to devolve into one of those many fights that appear on dog threads that often leads to a closing of the thread. I'm not sure you're working in your own best interest by bringing it up.

Again, sorry for your loss, and I'm glad you managed to handle it.

I think most of us here expend considerable time, effort and finances to pursue our chicken hobby and the idea that we should stand idly by while someone elses dog runs amok and destroys all that is ludicrous. Just because an animal is smaller then someone elses animal does not make it any less valuable to it's owner. Obviously the dogs owner didn't care enough about it to keep it home. To bad for them and the dog, they've learned a lesson the hard way. I would not have hesitated to do the same, my animals, big and small, are MINE and I will protect them from the neighbors dog as much as from any other predator.
