Stinky Acres Farm

I guess I should give an update here.

I have learned the hard way that Muscovy are not peaceful creatures. I dealt with their constant fighting for over a year hoping that one day they'd figure it out themselves. But after multiple fights ending in injured ducks with bloodied faces, torn caruncles, and missing feathers, I made the difficult decision to put one of them down. It was the last resort after trying so many different things to stop them from hurting each other.

Now I still have three and they still don't get along, but the worst culprit is gone. I couldn't bring myself to cull the others. All of them are pets.

On the bright side, I got permission to convert a shed that was my old chicken coop back into a chicken coop. So I will have a lot more space for my cranky ducks and more chickens! I think I will call it "The Recoop." :D

Big, exciting update! I have two chicken coops now (three coops in total)!

I just converted my old chicken coop, which was converted into a garden shed in 2021, back into a chicken coop! I spent the entire afternoon and evening cleaning it out, building knee walls and a roost, installing windows, laying down flooring, wiring in a new outlet, and adding accessories. I still have the run and nest boxes to build, but all my older chickens and one duck have already moved in!

There are a few reasons I wanted to do this. One reason is to have more space for more chickens (of course! :p). The second and main reason is to reduce stress in my flocks. My cockerel has been chasing away the older chickens to protect his pullets and the one duck is constantly bullied by the other ducks. Another reason is my older chickens are laying funky and brittle eggs and keeping them separated will keep the young chickens’ eggs cleaner and we’ll be able to identify who laid them more easily.

Both coops will eventually be connected via a pen so they won’t be completely separated all the time, but I think this will help me and my chickens a lot!

Photos coming soon! We are heading into a deep freeze though, so it might be a few days...
