I have a RIR hen she is about a year and a half old.The end of last summer early fall she fell ill with an impacted or sour crop. We got that problem all fixed up but her muscles never seemed to tighten back up. I read that that can be a common thing that can happen from that. She and the other girls (5 total) started laying right around the first of the year. Everything seems to be going well until recently we have been getting an egg a few times a week that smell like its going bad. I just learned not be be washing them in water, which I had been doing. They seems to be coming from the same girl as the pthers are all very different eggs. Could a sour crop effect the smell of the egg that would be layed? I can not figure out anything else that would make sense.Anybody hear of this or have any ideas?

Hi manipowers,

From what I read on another post in BYC under Chicken behavior and Egg Laying titled "Fresh Eggs Smell Rotten" it sounds like the hen laying the sticky egg could have an infection in her ovum. You may want to read more about it. Someone posted a link that you can go to which is post number 5. I went there and found a list of subjects, one of which is rotten fresh eggs. You can read about it there. I hope that helps.
