Stinky nasal discharge?

I went through the rest of my flock this morning and found 3 more chickens that had that horrible smell. Of coarse they were some chickens that I just bought from someone about a month ago. Thankfully they were in their own kennel away from my main flock. However there were 4 other chickens with them that don't show any signs or have the same smell. How long should I be looking for signs from them now.

I was doing some research online last night and found a vaccine for Coryza. Has anyone used this on their birds? It says that I can vaccinate chickens that are 8 weeks and older. Then 3 weeks after the first dose repeat.

I will be culling the 4 that we found with the undeniable stench today. I just can't have that spreading around. I'm more than positive it's Coryza. I've spent the past 24 hours researching.

I hope our baby chick doesn't have it! She has a runny nose, but it's clear and doesn't smell. And one of our older laying hens sneezes once and a while. But no odor I don't think.

i have heard that stinky disscharge (besides poo) means infection! make sure you talk to your vet and get them on some antibiotics.

There is no antibiotic that will make Coryza go away. It will just basically mask the symptoms. I just kills me that we had to cull 2 of my BLRW's

. I have learned so much from BYC! Thanks everyone for the great info! I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else. I know better now what to look for.

It can take two weeks to know if your other birds have it as well. If they have been ANYWHERE NEAR the infected birds, they can pick it up easily.

I'll be keeping an eye out for any more outbreaks. I've been walking around the coop and chicken run looking for runny noses and smelling the chickens. Not to mention disinfecting everything I can. We burned the chickens that we culled today and also burned all of their shavings as well as their left over food. What a mess!

We went thru the SAME thing ourselves last year except we had to kill and burn 150+ birds. I sprayed EVERYTHING with straight bleach and waited months before ever getting another bird. I will tell you this though, you will NEVER take in another pitiful bird after this experience!! I do not allow anything but eggs on my farm anymore!

OMG!

150 birds! I can't imagine having to cull that many for disease purposes. I mean we've butchered a heafty amount of birds at one time for eating purposes, but to have to do that many birds at one time just to burn them. I was out with the bleach yesterday. I'm still trying to figure out who the culprit is. We culled 3 out of 8 birds that I got from outside sources. The other 5 don't seem to show any signs. They are separated though. Thankfully! I had a friend who went through something like this about 6 months ago. She has swarn off having chickens for a while. She had to cull her whole flock also. I can completely understand the frustration now. I just thought that she was a little crazy or paranoid. Now I really know how it feels. I just hope that we culled in time so that no more of my flock gets it.

I have a gold laced Wyandotte rooster that has a foul smell about him too. He's about 14months old , when my daughter and I checked him over we found a plug of wax dried over his ear. So we pulled it out and behind it was smelly wax or puss. I'm not sure if we did the right thing but we irrigated with a syringe full of saline, then put tea tree oil on an ear bud and give it a good wipe over, he really didn't like the tea tree oil . Hope it's not this coryza . I haven't seen any discharge from his nose and nobody else seems to have any symptoms . Can chickens get canker like dogs?

Tea tree oil can be fatal to birds if ingested. All aromatics can be dangerous to avians, so please never put straight tea tree on any bird, and certainly not where they can pick at the area.


Yes, they can get canker, but it shows in cheesy deposits in the mouth as far as I know. Your rooster probably has an infected ear.
