I don't do DL for any sort of animal myself, but I've seen it done very, very well for both poultry and horses. (I never would've thought it could possibly work for horse stalls, but it actually does, if managed carefully. Brits seem to have it down to a science.) The only smell I noticed in those cases, though, was an earthy, compost-y kind of thing - not even in the same universe as the horrible eye-watering stench of a commercial plant.
