Hi all, I'm a newbie and right now just playing "fantasy chicken" and planning for the future. I'd like to have the option of keeping a rooster if I want so I've been researching possible solutions to deal with unwanted crowing. Please let me know what your experience is with any of the following:

1) The No Crow Rooster collar (or 2" velcro DIY)

Before and after "No Crow"
DIY Velcro version

2) Surgical modification of the syrinx (this seems like a great idea especially if it could be DIY...though obtaining the proper anesthetics could be impossible)

3) Finally, if you have roosters and you want to grow them as large table birds, does caponizing stop them from crowing? I haven't been able to find out if capons crow or not.

Thanks in advance!!

I've never had a rooster but I've heard that the no-crow collars work pretty well. Personally, I like to hear roos crowing, it's just their nature.

Hope you find the answers you're looking for. Thanks for joining us!

Thanks! The No Crow seems like the simplest solution - I find it all very interesting though!

I find hens singing the egg song much louder than a rooster who crows a couple times a day.
You got lucky. The roo I have starts at 4:30 and he thinks he's a clock. Has to crow on the quarter hour, the half hour, and the hour. Never stops! I've actually seen him belt out one crow after the other for a full 7 minutes...one crow, take a couple of breaths, next crow...... But he's Scout, he's special, and he stays.

We have a neighbor that has a rooster that likes to crow once every hour starting at 12 AM. Not exaggerating...
I don't know when people starting breeding out roosters' sense of time...

Isn't that kind of young to crow? I have an wounded rooster in my kitchen and he cross off and on starting about 5:30 am till 6:00 pm lol! I am investigating for a diy color for him.
