I use 5gallon food grade buckets with gamma seal lids for all my chicken supplies (feed, scratch, oyster shell, etc.). 2 buckets will hold 50lbs of feed. All my buckets are stored outside on shelving under cover - convenient and much easier than wrestling a large bag.

I think a lot depends on how many birds you're feeding and what works best for you. I's easier for me to handle the 5 gallon buckets than the bags. My hubby has parkinson's so he can't do much. We are older people and can't do the things we did when we were younger.

I have 8 chicken pens (4 in one area and 4 in another area), a brooder outside and 2 brooders inside a large storage unit that is insulated and airconditioned. I found it easier for me to use large plastic totes with locking handles. I buy 4 (50lb) bags of different types of feed but for the adult chickens I mix (2) 50lb bags of feed (laying pellets and gamebird conditioner) and divide it in half so each tote has 50lb mixed and scoop (made from a cat litter plastic container) it into a 5 gal. bucket to distribute to each pen. For the brooders, all that feed is kept in the storage unit with the brooders. I only buy feed for a week so long-term storage is not a problem.

I buy feed weekly. Occasionally I'll have a bucket or two left over but I always use it first. Now that the hot weather is here I'm noticing the birds aren't eating as much. I have chicks due to hatch for the next 3 weeks. First hatch next week Tuesday.
