Story Away!

I am enjoying them all. For the week old ones I've some polish: buffs, white crested blue, white crested black, & a red laced. I have a white crested black (I swear Mo & Hats could be related...have to get a good pic for you this weekend) and a silver laced who looks half spangled half laced right now. As well as 2 sultans. So I'm thinking of keeping a white crested blue--it looks like the self blue color in cochins, etc. & debating about a buff & the red laced. All 4 buffs seem kind of tough/bossy. lol Adorable as all get out of course.

I've also 3 buff brahmas so 1 of those will remain as well as the 1 light brahma (looks like a silver chipmunk!). The crevecoeur I'm planning on keeping. If I end up with a boy then I'll built a separate area for them so I can try breeding to keep them going as they're rare.

I think the rest of them are all cochin: 4 partridge, 1 that looks much redder. I'll keep at least 1; 2 self blues, 1 again to stay, a mottled that's staying, this tiny black one I'm trying not to fall for, & I think a silver laced.

I'd like to keep 1 of each different kind. Which would give me 8-11 depending on what I decide on the buffs, red polish, & the black one. Then there's the did I choose the girls or boys question once they get older. lol Those would replace the 3 boys at least I need to rehome plus a few extra for keeping 2 boys.

there's sort of a method to my madness here. lol I want the variety of breed/color.

If I were to get more chicks this week then I could put them out with these guys before I leave town, but I'd need to have the ones I'm not keeping pretty much gone before they'd arrive....oh, another thought. hmmm....lol I think I'm getting ahead of myself here.

Today's fun little....I trimmed my sultan's crest. I would notice how hesitant she was being, plus what seemed to be an occasional trip. I was worried that she wasn't finding the food spot. So, brought her in & cuddled her onto her back. Then very carefully cut the feathers from near her eyes. No more beautiful round, full, crest, but the look on her face! It was like magic...she could see! It really looked as if she was taking in the world for the first time. I'm wondering how quickly the feathers will grow. Does trimming screw up the feathers? If left to regrow will she still have the same crest? Or have I permanently screwed it up? I don't know that she's great show quality as her feet aren't as well feathered as I think they should be, but I'm not certain on the standard either. She'd probably be 1 that I'd like to try to show once I'm to that stage. I'm just really happy she's seeing better (she hasn't really taken to roosting & I think it's due to her sight) and will hopefully do a bit better.

don't worry. trimming won't ruin her crest. as long as you don't cut the blood feathers. vets actually suggest trimming their crests.

blood feathers? she didn't bleed so I'm hoping that means I didn't cut those. Marshmallow, older sultan, has somehow managed to style hers so she can see so I haven't had to worry about it. The creve & 2 polish seems to be doing ok seeing too. just little mouse. i'll be watching though to be sure the polish won't need a bit.

if she didn't bleed, then you didn't cut them. don't worry. here is a pic of Hats and his blood feathers...

they get bruised and bloody when they get damaged in any way.
