She went alone, not asking Jujube to come. In fact, she didn't tell anyone. This was a foolish plan with good intentions, and poor Pumpkin soon realized that is was more dangerous than an ever-changing pecking order...

At first, things seemed fine. It was a pleasant walk, until Pumpkin walked past the neighbors sleeping dog.

She shook with fear, not daring to move. Below, he dog growled, his eyes lit up. Why had she done this? It was the worst idea ever! Nobody would understand when she didn't come back this evening. But then, salvation arrived in the form of...

"Tiger? Is that you?"

Tiger didn't answer the question, but ran back toward the coop "what a coward!" thought Pumpkin, as the dog attempted to climb the tree. He was better at climbing then most dogs, so Pumpkin jumped up onto a higher branch. That would buy her some time. She was getting very tense, until Tiger came running back, leading Elliot, and behind them all the hens. "HEY!! DOG!!! OVER HERE!!" Tiger shouted.

It was the same dog as before. The dog ran to where Elliot and the others were. Pumpkin jumped down from the branch, stepped on the dogs chew toy that squeaked. All of a sudden the dog whipped around and ran after the chew toy. Pumpkin chucked it and all the chickens ran back into the coop. Safe and sound.

Mabel sat, trembling. That had been a scary episode. After Tiger had run into the coop screaming "PUMPKIN'S BEING DOG-CHASED!!! WE HAVE TO GO HELP HER!!!" everyting had been a blur. She wasn't sure if she had followed Tiger by herself, or if Tiara-Tutu or Indigo or Jujube had pushed her along. She remembered splitting up into four groups so the dog didn't know which to chase until another diversion, the squeak toy, and then Pumpkin throwing it and then joining up with the group. By the time they got across the street, the dog was chasing them again, but the run door was closed this time, so they all slipped through the hole in the wire before the dog could get to them. He had tried to dig under the run, but Big-person had caught him, and dragged him back to the neighbors.

When they got back to the safe coop, panting, Elliot sat Pumpkin down. "Pumpkin," he started, "that was a very irresponsible thing you did. You should have asked someone to come. And you should thank Tiger. Without him, you would've been toast." "I know," she said uncomfortably...

"I-I just thought I was safer here...that there were fewer dangers than our old home...after all, BIg-Person will let us free-range sometimes" Elliot glared at Pumpkin, and she shrank away. "well" She thought "there goes my head henmanship, at least for a while." she sighed and shrank away. Now she had better go and hide wherever Mabel used to hide. Pumpkin had never felt so ashamed.
