First, congratulations on your upcoming wedding. I know it's stressful when, on top of everything else, you're having to place your birds in someone else's care. Just make sure you walk them through their routine and come up with a version of it that your chicken sitter can deal with. It's never quite what we'd do but hopefully it won't ruffle too many feathers with the chickens. You might want to leave a note with things they might see the roosters doing since they are starting to mature. Chicken mating can look a little scary to someone not used to it. Also if one of your boys is prone to fight letting them know how and what's proven to you to be successful in breaking it up. Again, congratulations and enjoy your honeymoon.

Ditto Dat^^

I appreciate written instructions when I critter sit...so I can double check what I was told.

Congrats on your upcoming wedding. Fortunately, you have a nice big run. It does help to walk the pet sitter though the process. You can demonstrate the best way to prevent chickens from sneaking out of the door. When I want to be extra sure that chickens are not hanging around the run door to get out, I throw treats for them to the far side of the run and as they all hurry over to the opposite side, I step in. I couldn't tell from the photos if your run has a perch in it, but that is a nice place for a hen to get away from an amorous rooster. The chance that all your roosters hit that stage of puberty the week you are gone hopefully is pretty slim, but a perch provides a little peace of mind (not that you have much extra time to put one up.)

There is a small dowel rod (I know I'm spelling that wrong) that they use. It's the only round perch I use. The rest are wide side up 2x4s in the coop. I may try adding some things. I cut a huge fimosa branch the other day and laid it in there. It gave them good fun for a few days. After they weren't deathly afraid of it.

Correct spelling for dowel.....perches and especially roosts should be fairly large, 2 to 4" in diameter.

Absolutely. I found the dowel rod and it's fairly large in diameter. It's funny, even though it may be better for them to have a wide perch like the ones in my coop a 2x4 wide side up, but them seem to like the round dowel rod better. But it is in the run so I am witnessing two different sets of times and uses for the different perches.

I use both flat 2 x 4 s. and rounds... For the rounds, I use natural tree branches. Good size diameter, and sand all sharp knots and protrusions smooth.. I leave the bark on for good grip.

Yes, functional perches(nest box access) and roosts(sleeping) are different than 'recreational' perches/roosts out in the run.

Wow love this progress log. Very impressed. Congrats on your marriage and good to know your soon to be wife doesn't mind the feathered friends.

Definitely gonna subscribe to this.
