Chapter 15
Did you know silkies have 5 toes?
"Well I didn't." said Fern.
The silkies have been really getting along with us- they hang out just with each ohter, and don't venture far outside. Today it was very cold though, so they stayed in the coop. Also...
"What the egg is this?!" Sandy said looking up at the sky.
"Owch!" Lacy yelled, "It's in my eye!"
"It melts, birdbrain." Chessnut said. What were we talking about? Snow. It's like rain... but white! And it is VERY cold. It came down heavy- and whoever was born this year didn't know what it was.
"I'm so scared!" Shuddered Button.
The first one to take a step outside was the older chickens who have expirienced this before. Bell'e, Jewels, Chessnut, Rosie, Carmen, Houdinni. Finally I was brave enough to take a step outside. Brrrr! COLD!
"Where's the bugs? The grass...?" Fern asked.
"Wwwhat?" said Doe.
The Doe and Ray just stood looking at us, like we were crazy. Well, I'll tell you something. Silkies are weirder than you think. They don't sleep on roosts, just in nesting boxes! I started to scratch around.
"Found the grass!" I said. Well, it was just hiding under the snow the whole time! Who knew?!?
Lacy took a bite of the snow and flapped her wings.
"This is actually good guys!" Lacy said.
After playing in the snow for a bit, Sandy and button felt bad for the silkies, because no one wanted to play with them.
"Come on, let's invite them over!" Sandy exclaimed.
It would be a very nice guesture of kindness, after all. -Continued tomorrow!-
Ch. 15 continued
"Hey, Doe, Ray, come over here!"
They hesitated for a moment, exchanged looks, and skipped over here. They stoped in front of us, and I finally got a good look at them. Doe was considered a Blue Partridge silkie. Doe had blueish, golden fluff. Ray was a wonderful shade of gold, like Sandy. We showed them how to snatch up bugs too!
They weren't very good at it- so Fern gave them a few of hers. This was a start of our new friendship.
After catching bugs, we showed them how to dust bathe. It was pretty hard since the ground was packed solid...
"Heyyyy Marbles!!!!" Chessnut said. Ugh, what does she want?
"Hi." My daddy answered.
"Want to sit next to me?" Daddy and I both exchanged worried glances. This was because I did not like Chessnut. Daddy politely said he was sleeping next to me tonight, and she walked away talking to herself.
* * *
It has been gettig dark VERY early- so we had to go to bed. It's a shame the silkies cannot fly. They just have to sleep in an old nesting box. I slept next to my daddy and fell asleep.
