Chapter 18
The Feeder girl had finally let us out! We heard her trying to open the door, but for some reason it was locked.
"Ugh... why wont this OPEN!" She said. Finally, there was a stream of sunlight coming from outside.
"There we go... must've been frozen." she exclaimed. It was a rucuss of noices, clucking, flapping, and talking before all of us made it outside.
"Wow... look at this!" Sandy said. She was talking about the newly white stuff strewn across the ground. "I havn't seen anything like it!"
"It's called snow." Said Chessnut.
Obviously she would know, since she has been living in the coop for 2 years, and this was her second expirience with snow. I took another step in this snow. It didn't seem deep-but it was cold! While all this was happening, out of the corner of my eye I saw the feeder girl getting the eggs. The only chickens who layed today were Fern, Lacy, and of course Chessnut. Chessie layed an egg EVERY single day! Sometime the father of the feed girl would joke around saying,
"I wish we would have gotten a flock of just Chessnuts', look at those perfect eggs!" But, it was funny since his favorite chick was Carmen, and he loved seeing all the colors of our plumage.
I went up to my Daddy, and snuggled with him for awhile, until I heard,
"Hey Houdinni- you taking a break from the eggs girl?" the feeder girl asked. All the chickens laughed- Houdinni had been grumpy since she heard about the snow fall- so she tried to start a potition by not laying eggs. Doesn't seem like it's working though.
Bell'e looked at me. It was the first time I noticed how pretty she really was. Her sparkling green legs, her great fea-
"Sophie! Why don't you try to eat the snow?" Bell'e excitidly said. I saw everyone else eating it- so apparently it wasn't harmful. I accepted, and tried some of the sparkling, glittering snow.
It was still cold- but it dissolved in my mouth! It tasted just like fresh water!
I told Doe to try some- but she didn't have much. After about a half an hour, we all went back inside.
"Look at the bottom of my feet!" Said lacy.
Lacy's feet were kind of pink!
"Just like Sandy's!" I said happily.
The rest of the day was same old, same old, until it got darker...
