So sorry for you diagnosis. I agree with Dawg, there's no way to guarantee that your birds were not be a danger to other people's flocks. I occasionally get hatching eggs from others, but never birds apart from chicks from reputable hatcheries, and I never go to swap meets.

Some infections can also be carried by wild birds, and the only way to truly prevent these would be by keeping your flock in a strictly indoors enclosed structure. I am not willing to do that myself and so there will always be some risk.

So the deed is done and they are buried 7 feet down with my wonderful old horse. Disinfecting has begun. Can you give me some names of hatcheries. My kids are heartbroken and I would love to be able to give them something to look forward to.

It hurts, but you did the right thing. Be thorough in disinfecting everything including waterers and feeders, nest boxes, roosts, inside walls of hen houses etc...
Meyer hatchery is in Ohio. You can google "Meyer hatchery" and it'll show pics of just about every breed imaginable. Show your kids the pics of the different chicks and let them choose some, they'll love it. Their prices and shipping are reasonable. I've ordered from them several times without any problems. I've also ordered from "Ideal hatchery" out of Texas without any problems. Another hatchery in Ohio is "Mt Healthy," but I've never dealt with them.
That said, get your brooder ready and good luck!

So sorry for your loss. I have had good luck ordering twice from Meyer Hatchery in Polk, Ohio. I usually tell people to order from a close-by hatchery if possible, to prevent chicks from being in the mail too long. There are many reputable hatcheries around the US. What state are you from?
