straight run, really? rant...

I bought 12 chicks from TSC and got 10 hens. It's just the luck of the draw. I got an order of 20 SR chicks from Ideal, and all but two were roos.

The hens are what determines the sex also, so if they have several hens that throw a larger majority of males, then your odds of pullets are very low. I've been really lucky with my girls, they throw a large percentage of pullets only a few cockerels here and there.

OMG don't even get me started again, Hatchery straight run is rediculous !!!!!!
43 chicks 34 roo's......sounds so familiar.....ph yah that was me with my screwed up order, ordered a variety of chickens cuz I wanted to see what ones I liked the best of the breeds. I liked. So I ordered 5 each of BO, Delawares,speckled sussex, barred rocks, ancona's, assorted wyandottes......well they musta thought I liked the best roosters............... cuz I have tons of em. 1 hen per 5 in all but the anconas that didn't come at all, took extra SS instead, they sent 11 because 4 died in shipping in my first order, out of 11, 9 are roos. TG I bought 6 from TSC 3 EE and 3 BLSL pullets or I would only have 9 hens, as it is I really wanted 20 hens 2 roosters, but now I can feed these buggers till I sell them or they are big enough to butcher.
I don't care what they say they know exactly what they are giving you !!! I think they are all sexed then they just grab ya a hen or two and throw in a thousand roosters.....ggggrrrrrrrrrrr, never again sexed pullets for me from ? I don't know where yet maybe TSC seems easy enough to get them there, no waiting, no shipping, no sick babies or dead babies on delivery, and hens not roosters............arghhhhhh grumble grumble gggggggrrrrrrrrr

I will say if you buy strait run from TownLine Hatchery you will get as they come from the incubator. Sex linked chicks will be eveened out.

i feel your pain! I also bought a so called 'straight run' from McMurray... ended up with 9 roos and one hen... I am SOOOO not happy and will never by a straight run from mcmurray again...

McMurray advertises so much there are always thousands of more suckers on their site every year. They will never quit doing it.
