Same thing happened to me! One evening just before dark, we came home and there were two half grow chickens just sitting crashed out on our big red cattle gate. Turned out they were roo's. They were beautiful. One was an americana and one was a barred rock. Unfortunately the americana got taken off by the coyotes before we got a secure pen built. But we still have the barred rock and he is big and gorgeous. And friendly.

That happened to me!

One day I noticed a chicken out scratching in our front yard with Henny. She was the ugliest chicken I'd ever seen. I just knew she was infested with something but I couldn't do anything about it. Henny has a mind of her own and she goes where she wants. She obviously enjoyed the company of this new friend.

Our neighbor across the street has chickens so I assumed it was his. He assumed it was ours. When he found out it wasn't, he threw it in the fenced junk yard next door - no water, no food. I felt so bad for her but couldn't get her out. She finally excaped and came back in a day or so - once again I found her outside pecking around with Henny.

She looked like those pics of 'battery hens'. I suspect that she escaped from a local dairy. She moulted more and became even uglier. For two years that chicken looked naked and on death's door. It seemed like she had some disease that prevented her from growing feathers.

We bought some chicks from MM and our flock grew. She and Henny would hang out together like a couple of old ladies, complaining about the young'ns.

Obviously old and with hardly any feather, I was always surprised that she'd survive our cold winters. Every time she'd start to regrow feathers, the rooster would break them off.

One day, I she didn't come to eat. She only had a few feathers, was skinny, rarely laid an egg and could hardly walk. I knew it was about time. I put her in isolation with Henny for a companion, so she could go quietly.

Much to our surprise, her leg improved and her feathers stopped breaking off everytime they tried to grow back. Now she is a very pretty sex link - I don't know what kind. Overall, she looks red but when you look close you realize that she is really white with red rimmed feathers. When makes her look like an old lady who dyes her hair red but needs a new dye-job so we've always called her Maxine.

The most amazing thing abou Maxine is that this past week I noticed her comb is even a healthy red. I've been catching her in the nest box again. I don't know what was wrong with her for the past 3 years but she obviously has her second wind!

Ole-crone,
that is such a great story! There is certainly an air of mystery around my new hen, just wondering where she came from and why. It makes her a little bit special. Right now she roosts on top of the barn door, and seems to be comfortable picking around the heifer barn, but she sometimes sneaks into the henhouse -- a mix of that chicken slyness and shyness. I haven't picked a name yet -- I guess I'm getting to know her better. She's definitely a survivor.

She DOES look like an OEG from those pics. It will be nice to have her around. I have few to no predators, so it's ok for her to live outside the coop.
