Eek!
My EE has very thick butt feathers and ocassionally needs a butt bath. Two weeks ago as I was bathing her, I noticed a dry, hard crusty elongated thing (‘scab’ for lack of a better term), coming out of her rear. Not near the vent, but lower on her rear.
At first I thought it was a dry crusty poop, but when I looked closer, it was a bit curvy and looked like a dried up caterpillar crust. Hard to describe, I have no pic, but maybe it was 3/4” to 1” long and maybe just under 1/4” in diameter. I pulled on it, pinched it at the base, and it broke off (still dry and crusty). I wish I had taken a pic!

Fast forward 2 wks (we’ve been away), and today I just gave her another butt bath. The ‘scab’ from where I pulled off/pinched the ‘thing’ was still visible, so I asked hubby to get a pic. See attached.
It feels hard to the touch, but I can’t pull anything out as it’s just below skin level. She gets a bit squirmy when I poke at it, so I left it.
Yuck.. Hubby thinks it’s a large quill “follicle” but ... it’s so much larger than her other quills, I doubt it. I hope I’m wrong, I hope it’s not a worm or parasite cavity or tube..?
Does anyone know what this could be? Is it worth a trip to the vet? Thank you for any feedback and support!!

It might be an ingrown feather cyst or abscess. You can try to remove it after disinfecting the skin and using a sterilzed needle the probe the area and try to find a buried feather. Here is a link with various pictures of feather cysts:

Hi Eggcessive: Thank you for your quick reply and the info and links. Much appreciated!
Looking at the 2nd photo of the link you sent (the hand holding a small canary)... the growth on my EE looked quite similar in that it was thick, crusty and curvy. I'm hoping you're right, that it's a feather cyst of some sort - but I don't feel comfortable trying to take it out; am worried it's deep and may cause bleeding, etc. I'll check with my vet and see what she recommends. Many thanks again!

I sent the pic to my Vet, and she said,
"...I can't really tell from the photo, but it certainly could be an ingrown feather/quill. If there is no bad smell and she is acting ok- I don't think this is an emergency- but if you really want to know what I think, I would recommend you bring her in sometime in the near-ish future."

So... I think I'll let it be for now, as Robyn does not seem to be bothered by it, and her appetite and general demeanor are fine/normal.
