strange cry

I was awaken by a strange cry this morning, 3:30, from my back yard. Sounded like a withces hackel. I do have a resident wild rabbit, and I know they make strange noises when being harmed. Would this be a fox? There has been fox seen in our neighborhood. I have never heard an owl sound like that and it was loud enough to wake me up. It was just some sound that I never heard before. Would really love to get one of those outdoor cameras to see what lurks out in my yard at night.

If it was screaming like a scalded baby, chances are good your resident rabbit got eaten.

@Bear foot Cool site. I don't think it was an owl. I'm thinking maybe two vixen fighting.

..I don't know. It was something that I never heard and could identify right away.

@goldtopper...I have heard a rabbit being killed before and I know its quite a disturbing call. I have a vegetable garden going in this spring and if it was Mamma rabbit being eaten I am kind of glad.

Fox can make some noises that you would never imagine could come from a fox.I was out hunting coyotes last fall,it was a pitch black night and a fox started make similar noises about 10ft from me,very creepy.

Not sure where you are, but bobcats sound like a lady screaming when they call. They scare the dickens out of me when I go outside at night and they're out there screetching

@howfunky http://www.soundboard.com/sb/Bobcat_sounds_audio.aspx When I was in girl scouts...along...long...long..time ago..lol..I saw a bobcat while we were out camping in the southern hills of the state, in wintertime, creeping down the side of a revene. I screemed "BOBCAT" and we high tailed it back to camp. If I HEARD what is on these tapes, I would have freaked. I don't think it was that.

@Hoss Thanks, Is that like what you heard? We have alot of Red fox in the area, and their area is becoming smaller and smaller with our building of huge walled in develpments from sold off farm estates. So we are stuck with deer on our front porches, raccoons in our backyards and fox running around the neighborhood.

A red fox can make some hair raising cries when they are out looking for mates.Fooled me last year, I thought it was a bobcat, something we dont normally have in our area.

FOX...I will never forget that high pitched screechy sound, so eerie. They killed my two male ducks last week and I have been trying to get them since.
