I went to the coop to collect this morning and found an interesting egg. What is it! All eggs from two similar hens.

Just a fairy egg! Most do not have yolks but I’ve gotten lucky, if it does, you can make a tiny omelette for the girls!

What breed do you have that lays that dark egg? You can probably narrow it down to the girls with that color egg!

We only have two egg layers atm...working on that now got chicks on the ground!

they are both I think Rhode Island reds and do everything together, they have 3 nest boxes to choose from and both sit in same one 😂

Hmm it’s strange for the egg color to be so much darker, but assuming that since the whole egg was a fluke, it’s alright. How old are the girls?

Go ahead and crack it open for us, do it on the pan in case there’s a yolk.
They look like my production reds.
Production reds and RIRs are darker than these birds with green tipped tails, these look more like RSLs than either of those

For OP: We’re thinking your birds might be RSLs, fairy Eggs are normal near the beginning of a hens laying life and end. They can also pop up every now and then as just a minor fluke in the system. When chickens see that another hen has laid somewhere, like a certain nest box, then another hen will see that and know it’s a safe place to lay, therefore only laying where other eggs are, or where they know it’s been safe to lay in the past. It’s normal behavior. Even if you have 30 boxes they’ll all want to lay the same couple places! Mine have even stopped as low as sitting in the same box at the same time! It’s hilarious, they always look quite awkward!
