Strange "egg"

Hi,
We keep a couple of chickens who are now about 2 and 3 years old respectively...from different batches. They are factory rescues, red sex linked, debeaked. We got them before they began laying and they never made it to the egg factory. Both have been excellent layers.

Last week, one of our girls was acting lethargic and sitting on the nest a lot like she was trying to lay but couldn't. She has laid and egg every day since she started so this is unusual for her. We gave her a "spa" treatment ( hot tub bath for about 10-15 minutes ) and the next day, she laid an "egg" similar to the one I have attached here. This one was laid today by our other girl who showed the same symptoms and we did the same treatment for her last night.

I thought they were maybe egg bound or had peritonitis or something and that maybe the bath helped them get it all out. They both seem to feel better now...for now at least. We have also increased their calcium intake (oyster shells and cottage cheese treats and spinach ) and are giving them a supplement with vitamin D3 (poly visol). I hope they will be back to normal now but the first girl to experience this has not laid any eggs since passing this.

Does anyone out there know what this is? We call it an alien egg. Has anyone else experienced this? I have searched the internet and have not found anything like it.

Thank you!

Maybe what they call a lash or lash egg? Sometimes they come with an egg like material, sometimes they are just "laid" alone. They seem to think it is part of the lining of the hens reproductive system, often seems to happen with hens that are internal laying also... and RSLs are prone to reproductive problems unfortunately. Old BYC thread on them and some links with other pics.

Thank you! I have not seen this before in any of my other chickens. They definitely feel better now that the alien is out of them. Should I do anything more for them to help them with this? I read greek yogurt maybe - I have just been trying to get more calcium and vitamin D3 into them.
