I have nine duck eggs in the incubator that are alive and doing well on day 22. Seven of the eggs are are almost completely dark or filled when I candle them, like I would expect. Two of the nine eggs are strange. The part which contains the blood vessels and fills the other eggs, only goes about half to two thirds the way around in those eggs. I thought the babies might not be alive but then I saw them both clearly moving around. In fact, because half to a third of the egg is not covered, it is easier to see in them than the others and see what looks like a pulse or slight rhythmic movement of the duckling. Both of the eggs came from my oldest duck who lays large eggs with huge yolks. Any ideas? Are these two duckling behind in development? Can they possible survive? This is my fourth time hatching eggs and I have never seen this before.

The eggs are at school and I have to take my son to college tomorrow so I am not working until Monday. I am thinking of going to school on Sunday to check them and lock them down. I should have taken a picture today but did not think of it. In my past hatches, the part of the egg or tissue that contains the blood vessels (to me it resembles a placenta), seems to grow from the initial circle with blood vessels into an oval that begins to encircles the egg, meets on the other side, and fills it. These eggs have not had it meet and are not filled with it. In the open space, you can see light and dark spots when candled. Normally, I think dark spots are death. But these are clearly moving on their own. One even had a point like a duck tail toward the bottom of the egg. One of my high school students has helped me on all my hatches. She candled them on her own yesterday and saw them moving and alerted me. I saw it today. This is not fluid moving (although the egg is filled with fluid except the air sac). The blood vessels are also crisp and clear and the air sac is growing but smaller than some of the other eggs. I have lost a couple of eggs this hatch but these do not seem like those.

I went to school to lock my eggs down and got a picture of one of the strange eggs. Here it is:

The lighter gray shadow I circled is clearly moving, so the duckling must be alive. All the rest of the eggs have been completely dark like the part outside of the green circle. Four of the eggs had pipped (not this one) so I didn't want to mess with the other eggs. Do you think this one is behind? Do you think it will make it?

I think maybe it is undeveloped quiter, but I also think maybe you should give it a chance?

Up to you. I am almost positive its a quitter though.

Are these by any chance shipped eggs? Looks like u have air called that are screwy. There us a term "saddles" for air cells that look similar. I've shipoed quite a few shipped eggs that had dislodged air cells.

SPELL CHECK...UGHH..CORRECTION > I'VE HATCHED SEVERAL SHIPPED EGGS WITH DISLODGED AIR CELLS. I MARK THEM WITH A PENCIL, IF THE AIR CELL DIPS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE EGG I PLACE THOSE IN AN EGG CARTON SMALL END DOWN/UP BECAUSE IT'S DIFFICULT TO DETERMINE WHERE THEY WILL PIP. IF JUST ON ONE SIDE..MAKE SURE TO SET THE LOWEST PART OF THE AUR CELL UP WHEN U PLACE THE EGG FOR LOCKDOWN. ALSO..WHEN THE AIR CELLS ARE MESSED UP..SOMETIMES I GET CHICKS PIP IN THE WRONG SPOT( NOT AIR CELL) WHICH PUTS THEM AT RISK FOR SUFFOCATION. I HAVE ON OCCASION ( VALUABLE EGGS)INTERVENED AND MADE SURE TO OPEN A TINY AIR HOLE AT THE PIP SITE TO ENSURE THE CHICK GETS ACCESS TO OXYGEN. IF THE CHICK PIPS WRONG SPOT BUT HAS CREATED AN AIR HOLE I DO NOT INTERVENE. SO..YES..UR EGGS STILL HAVE A CHANCE AT HATCHING..WHAT IS UR HUMIDITY AT?

My humidity is between 65-70. I am more concerned that they can't get through their shells. It has been 24 hours since four pipped and they have only slightly zipped. Here are three of them. Is it time to start intervention? I do hear some peeping.

Well...they look to be pipping in the perfect spot. I noticed the pip marks are in different spots..so that's good to. When they 1st pip..it can take 24 hrs to hatch

At 1st pip they still have egg yoke and blood to absorb from vessels. If u " help" to soon they can bleed out/ have un-absorbed yoke. The act if breathing with 1st pip hole strengthens thier lungs..gets blood/oxygen pumping strong and helps to absorb blood/yoke.
