Hi all,
Earlier this week, I went out at 6 AM (my normal time) to let my chickens out of the coop and to transfer them to the run (the coop is in the garage, the run is in the yard). One of my hens, Vicky, is usually the last one to come out, but she was taking much longer than usual. I looked inside the coop and saw her eating some fleshy substance. I was concerned and picked her up out of the coop and took the thing out of her mouth. It was mostly eaten already, but from the remnants of it it looked like a soft, skin-like round object that was dripping yellow liquid all over the floor. I thought it might've just been a fluke egg, which is why I didn't post earlier.
This afternoon, I found a very strange egg in the run. It was the largest egg I've ever seen - 2 to 3 times as large as the eggs the hens usually lay. It also had some strange red spots on the top that looked a bit like blood vessels (just to clarify, we have no roosters).
I've been feeding the girls oyster shells for about a month or so (I got the hens last April) because some of the eggs had very thin shells. But something strange is going on here. They seem fine and healthy and are eating normally.
Any ideas on why the eggs are like that? I've attached multiple pictures.
Thanks,
Kuritsa
