Strange Eggs

Hi all,

Earlier this week, I went out at 6 AM (my normal time) to let my chickens out of the coop and to transfer them to the run (the coop is in the garage, the run is in the yard). One of my hens, Vicky, is usually the last one to come out, but she was taking much longer than usual. I looked inside the coop and saw her eating some fleshy substance. I was concerned and picked her up out of the coop and took the thing out of her mouth. It was mostly eaten already, but from the remnants of it it looked like a soft, skin-like round object that was dripping yellow liquid all over the floor. I thought it might've just been a fluke egg, which is why I didn't post earlier.

This afternoon, I found a very strange egg in the run. It was the largest egg I've ever seen - 2 to 3 times as large as the eggs the hens usually lay. It also had some strange red spots on the top that looked a bit like blood vessels (just to clarify, we have no roosters).

I've been feeding the girls oyster shells for about a month or so (I got the hens last April) because some of the eggs had very thin shells. But something strange is going on here. They seem fine and healthy and are eating normally.

Any ideas on why the eggs are like that? I've attached multiple pictures.

Thanks,
Kuritsa

Occasionally more than one yolk passes at the same time and gets a shell all the way around. One or two odd eggs are nothing to worry about. If it is frequent it might indicate a
problem in the reproductive system. What breed are your hens?
That's kind of what I suspected, but what are the red, bumpy lines on the top of the egg?

All five of my hens are Barred Rocks.

Could it have been a thin shelled egg which broke, and then she ate it?

It was a lash egg, an indication of a reproductive infection.
I don't see any indication of a lash eggs in these pics.
Nor in any of the descriptions.
Tho would have been interesting to see this one:

Was the shell thinner in that area?

How old are these birds, in weeks or months, and how long have they been laying.
What all and how exactly are you feeding?
When will the coop and run be attached?
Moving them daily may be causing undue stress.

In my experience, egg quality (thin shells, runny type eggs, low production) suffers if the chickens get too much "table food".
I rarely treat anymore -unless I dig up a nice grub and I feed a good quality feed.
