Strange Noise **CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP** Video added

Why would it do that?
I was going to add wheat, oats and barley to their diet, will that be okay? They still get free choice crumbles but just looking for a way to get more out of my feed bill.

The fungi / yeast doing the fermentation may use / consume some of nutrients the formulated food (Layena in your case) is designed to supply the chickens with. If enough consumed, then chicken consuming the nutrient deficient feed will in time begin to slow in growth / productivity or develop health problems. Generally speaking the person formulating diets provide a little overage (excess) of the nutrients known to be essential but when the feed is somehow degraded (fermentation, age, excess heat) that overage may not apply.

As a general rule when using a quality layer feed cut with intact grains, I do not have the layer feed make up any less than 2/3's of the total intake, otherwise the diet can be nutrient deficient especially in respect to protein. It is usually more than 3/4's. Only exceptions to that are during cold winter months and when natural foraging makes up a significant proportion of intake.

You birds low water intake is also a a function of fermentation process where the feed is hydrated. The hen is recieving a significant proportion of her water need through that and thus has less need for water which limits the amount of medication ingested.

Thank you for the info. Very informative!! I will still offer them the Layena crumbles and will start fermenting whole grains for them.

I actually didn't give her the fermented feed until after she stopped coughing and was offering the medicated water prior to that but she wasn't interested at all. When I put the fresh water in there when she appeared to be acting normally again, she drank it right up. I honestly think she had something caught in her oesophagus because she is fine now, no coughing, no funny noise and she's talking normally again. She has a bright red comb and doesn't feel hot anymore.

Great to hear ppl using fermented feeds! I just wanted to add my two cents about natural "antibiotics": I use a echinacea & goldenseal tincture in the water of anyone/ thing that I think might have infection. It works wonders in less than 3 days & I have cured things like respiratory infections (in ppl, animals, & other ppl's birds) & infected wounds... I love it because it's not harsh on the system like prescription drugs & it is totally safe to eat the eggs. If you can find it, it's great to have on hand! Use for 3-5 days (depending on severity of infection) & then take 3 days off. Repeat if needed, though I've never had to give a second round for anything. Glad your girl is on the mend!

I noticed cross referencing in another thread concerning my comments on fermentation of feeds versus grains. Some parties as using feed and grains interchangeably which is not correct in most instances and almost always with poultry kept in confinement. Beware some parties that are not nutritionist are portaying themselves as such. Lots of post does not always equal lots of experience or sound knowledge. Take time to look into activation of seeds and how it effects nutrient availability. Fermentation of feed is also a potential management headache where shelflife of so treated feed is greatly reduced and toxins will be a problem as well as change in available nutrient profile.

Are you a nutritionist? I would love for you to be able to answer the questions that I asked over there. I have been feeding my CX chicks fermented starter from day one and they appear to be doing quite well. I have definitely noticed a decrease in the poop (without a decrease in food consumption) compared to my last 2 batches of pooping machines. They have almost doubled in size in one week. I am looking for a way to help these guys utilize more of their feed and from what I have read and am now experiencing, fermented feed is the way to go. If the yeast (I'm using whole wheat wild yeast sourdough starter) is consuming the nutrients, what do they become? My feed is made fresh every evening allowing to ferment overnight, is that enough time for the yeast to consume nutrients that it normally would not if other feed was available?

I hope I didn't offend you, definitely not my intent and if I did, I'm so sorry!!!!
