Strange object in nesting box

Found a strange thing in nesting box with eggs. It was a reddish color about 1.5 inches long about 1/2 inch in diameter. Looked like a small liver and harder than a liver (soft leather feel) I cut it open and had definite cell chambers inside. Does anyone have any idea what it is. Haven't noticed any sick hens. Don't know which hen it came from (have 20 and age range is 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 years old. It wasn't in any droppings, just laying next to an egg. No blood or droppings in nest.
