We were putting the girls up this evening and saw something near the vent of one of my 3yo Barred Rock's vent. At first I thought it was a worm. I caught her and removed it. It was papery in consistency and had some shell fragments attached to it. There were some shell fragments near her vent as well. I'm sure this is not good. I have attached a picture. Any ideas?

It was about 5 inches. She seems ok. The heat is terrible and they all act miserable. I'm watching her to see if she's eating. She was her same stubborn "I'm going up last" self at least.

Honestly my thought is an thin egg broke in or on her. As long as he seems okay though. There wasn't anthing else in the vent you could see or feel, right?

No, nothing I could see. I felt around and other than just a little dried poo and a few more fragments of shell, her vent felt normal. I checked on her a few minutes ago. She seems alert & she's in her normal spot in the run. The shell fragments were super thin. She also usually lays longer, thinner eggs that we call egg bullets.

maybe one just "popped" when she layed it, she got the back splash and someone ate the rest? If she seems perfectly fine I wouldn't stress too much but do keep an eye on her.

It looks like an the membrane of an egg. Perhaps the shell did not form around it (the last step in the egg-laying process) or possibly the egg broke inside her. If this was so, you would probably see some raw egg-like discharge. I wouldn't worry too much unless this happens consistently. Keep and eye on her. Hopefully it's a one-time thing. :hugs

I hope so! She has been a healthy bird and a good layer. I love all my girls 💓 Thank you!

They do love to "snack" on a broken egg when they have the chance! Thank you!
