Hello again everyone. I recently had a bullying issue and had to separate an injured quail. Ever since, one of the others (not the bully and not the separated one) has been making a new type of noise. I've had them for a bit over a month now and have never heard this call before. It sounds a bit like a firework on its way up.

Should I be concerned about this sound? Is she just lonely or uncomfortable being in the cage with the bully? They are chinese quails.

As you describe it as a firework going up, I think what you are hearing is their call (I'd call it a 'Phewwwww'-sound). She's calling for the one you separated. Either because she's actually missing it or just because she knows it's somewhere around and she can't see it. Placing the cages as close together as possible so they can see and maybe even touch each other usually helps.

Ah okay. Thanks for the reply. It is a pheeeew :) I always thought the laughing sound was the call? (Whee whee whee) that come in sets of three? They've been making that noise way more than usual and all three of them do it. I've actually found a YouTube video of it if you need to hear it :)

Edit: They could touch each other at first but they kept trying to jump into the other cage and just end up bumping their faces so they are a bit further apart now. Can't touch but they can see.

I'm not that good at speaking quail, but in my experience the two sounds (Pheewww and Whee whee whee) are often used together or in the same situations, so I assume they are both a kind of call - I'm not sure what the difference in meaning is, though I assume there is one as it would make no sense to have two sounds for the same thing.

True. Thanks for letting me know anyway. I am still a bit shaken up about the bullying so I want to keep everyone as happy as possible ^^ If it's just a normal quail sound that other people have heard, I feel like I don't have to worry as much :)

This is the sound I thought was the call (female at 4 seconds).

My quail made this noice before I got females...
is this a mating call or just a random noise? And is their a reason that my Japanese quail Is white and the ones I bought are brown? Or is it just a different type of Japanese quail

He is crowing, and they will do this if they have females or not. He may have been doing it more because he was trying to attract females to his territory.
All are Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica. They come in nearly as many color varieties as chickens do, but they’re all the same species.

Males do many sounds. When they build up their chest like that it's the typical " I'm the roo" crow. ( for coturnix). Speaking of sounds, I found a video that made an impression on me and I'm sharing
