The Rooster spontaneously starts running around and squawking like something is chasing him. He has done this a couple times in the past. He has no competition for hens, food, or territory. The flock is free-range so they only stay in the coop at night. He has plenty of space so I don't think bugs are a real problem. He is a very, very, nice rooster. He's a Barred rock, unsure what his age is, he seems to be a little on the older side though.

I don't think so, this morning before they were let out they all started clucking and squawking inside the coop. When the door was opened to check on them, the rooster went charging in to the door then ran out squawking, all the way up the hill and around the house. After a few minutes he simmered down and went about his routine normally.

Maybe it's an excitement or happy thing? My old rooster would get the "zoomies" in the morning.

It's hard to be sure, but he doesn't act very happy he acts kind of like something is chasing him and runs around dodging and jumping out of the way.

They may be seeing/hearing something alarming that you are not seeing/hearing.

He's not really over-active with the hens. He isn't overly cramped in a small space with flies, dung bugs etc. so I don't think he is bothered by insects to the point of running around like crazy. I have had him for about 1-2 years, I think he has a little more age than that. I haven't checked him yet for external bugs mostly because he doesn't really like being touched very much

My silkie rooster does this too. :/ I don’t think he can see very well, a crest trimming is definitely in order!
