Strange Tracks in Pen *Logical Conclusion on Page 46*

have you tried using a motion detector light? being that the snake only comes around at night, it may be deterred by a light coming on when it comes by.

i like the trash can idea but a snake that big would be able to get out of a trash can less than about 2/3 of its length. given the size of the track, you may have snake that is 6-10' or longer. what type of local snakes do you normally see out there?

Welcome! Hope we get this thing figured out!

I was thinking a large trash can, like the ones outside used at the curb the trash trucks pick up.

We don't have any snakes out here 10' long. Longest one I've ever seen was a 5 1/2- 6' gopher snake. Fortunately they're a mild snake for the most part.

I was thinking a rather FAT snake (ie. rattler) rather than a long snake, based off the tracks.

I think a game cam/ motion detector cam is a WONDERFUL idea, then we can really see what we're up against... who knows might not even be a snake at all!

Eeeek! I've got goosebumps all the way here in Pennsylvania! Maybe you should wear a suit of armor next time you go out to your coop!

Just kidding, well, sort of... Keep us posted!

Im going out on a limb here and gonna disagree with the sidewinder theory. The marks are too straight. Granted Ive never seen one, but when a side winder moves, its body undulates in a curved motion. Is it always in the same place? Going from one side to the other and under the blanket like that? Have you thought of maybe something is pushing an egg into a burrow or den?

Well, i have 5 bantam hens in that pen. They can all fly, which is good. i lock them in the aviary at night, which is where the nest box is, so don't think something is stealing eggs. But that looks like what is happening, that something is dragging something.

I also disagree with the sidewinder theory. The are not native to here.
I am PMing you with some local details. We have had weird exotics in these parts before.
A Nile monitor was caught in Rancho Cordova in 2010.

Place a cookie sheet covered in flour in the "path" tonight. It is helpful in getting good tracks.
