i'm gettin old, keeping up with this thread! but I can't stop checking to see if the mystery has been solved or not!!

It has rained for 20 of the last 25 days in California. Next week California is due for a dry spell - starting Monday for at least a week! Maybe the mysterious creature will return.

Colleen -- make sure that you have plenty of batteries!! We are counting on you!

I love this thread and haven't made it all the way to the end yet so this may have already been solved but just wanted to add that we have pet rats and when we let them out to play they routinely find a hiding spot and then spend lots of time finding things to drag into it. They are like crows and like to collect a stash in their dens. Sometimes it's food but they find all sorts of other stuff to put in there...paper....socks....pebbles. They'll grab whatever it is and drag it backwards into their "den". We have had to clean out stashes several times after they have been out to play and it's amazing the different stuff they'll drag in there. If Fluffy is adding to her stash (she looks like a girl rat to me) perhaps that explains the drag marks.

This is a really fun thread.....I can't wait to keep reading.

CopperCT - That's true! We moved a coop one time to reset the pavers underneath and found an abandoned rat nest. It was full of feathers, a plastic top from an umbrella, and other assorted oddities. Funny how rats go thrift shopping just like us.

#1California Chick - i am so tired of this rain! In all my years living here i don't remember it raining so much. And i notice the critters don't come out when it's pouring. Even Fluffy stayed put. All i got was another curious cat. She was probably wondering why that light kept flashing at her.

Maybe if i throw the rat on the snake it will show up?

i have high hopes for next week. We're supposed to get five whole days of sunshine! Every creature, great or small (or invisible) should come out then. i have my batteries all line up and two cams at the ready!

You know what? I'll bet CopperCT is right. My daughter had a pet rat in her college dorm room and she was always finding stashes of odd things the rat (had a really cute name that I can't remember) was hiding. She found pizza crust, chicken wings, earrings, car keys, pens, candy, etc. I completely forgot that they do that. When she came home she brought the rat with her and she was very sweet. She lived to be rather old I think. Anyway, that could be the solution to the mystery. When she drags whatever back to her den she drags it backwards over her tracks and obscures them, thus the drag marks with no tracks. I bet'cha!

I went back and looked closely at the pictures of Fluffy....she really does look like a girl. As someone else suggested male rats have rather large appendages on their rears and Fluffy doesn't

I just wanted to point out that one of the reasons she looks so healthy could be because she is pregnant and you may soon have alot more Fluffys dragging things around at night....never mind stealing food.... digging holes.... chewing up stuff and maybe spreading diseases. As much as I love rats as pets.....I would set the bigger trap and find a new home for Fluffy sooner rather than later as rat populations can quickly get out of control. Good luck with your adventure. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Was so excited to find this morning that my cam took 966 pictures ! ! ! ! !

Unfortunately, it was 960 pictures of Fluffy and then 6 pictures of my legs and face walking in to get the cam.

We are now on Day 1 of no rain (after almost a full month of non-stop rain). And it's supposed to get into the 70's this whole next week. i guess i will set both traps large and small and pull out my rat zapper (although i've never had a rat go in it). i don't think i can do a snap trap - don't want to see the consequences. But if i can't catch Fluffy in a day or two, i'll do the water hose under the coop with me in back with a pellet gun trick. It really bugs me that she's running back and forth spreading disease all night long.

Here's hoping i can catch her and then catch the elusive track-maker this next week.
