Strange Welsummer eggs?

I don't have a photo of this but we have what looks like 4 Welsummers I have posted a pic of them before but their eggs aren't what I expected. They are medium in size but not dark brown. They are actually a medium brown with dark brown speckles. I know that Wels apply the dark brown after the egg is formed but does this color sound like Wels or do you think they are a barnyard mix?

I don't have Welsummers, but I believe their egg color should be "Terra Cotta" and not a dark brown, more like a clay plant pot color. Now if you are looking for dark brown and some with speckles, the Black Copper Marans is what you need.

Some hens do lay lighter based eggs with darker splotches. Ideally, you want terra cotta coloring, like a brick color.

Did you get your hen from a breeder or hatchery? I have heard that egg color isn't the greatest with hatchery stock. I have never had hatchery wellies though. In my profile you can click on "my coop" and I have a page on my welsummers. You can compare your hen to see if she looks similar.

My chickens look just like yours so I think they were classes right. As for color we have 1 that lays perfect terra cotta eggs, 2 lay eggs a shade lighter and heavily speckled, and the other varies greatly she almost laid a white egg. We have been adjusting diet but unsure why it happened, otherwise she eggs look pinkish with dark speckled. All of our wells are very skittish, unlike our others that are friendly. I think it is because we did not raise them.
