Walked out the back door last weekend & found this egg balancing on a rung of a ladder we have stored between the house & garage. And the egg isn't even on one of the wide steps, but on one of the skinny braces in back! Our naughty Leghorn hens routinely escape from the chicken yard (why can't they just be good chickens, like the Wyandottes & Orphingtons??). This is one of their favorite perches. One started laying her eggs on a box below the ladder, (2nd photo below), so when our youngest hen started laying, I guess she figured this was close enough- as good a place as any!

Several years ago, when I first started keeping chickens, Betty, an EE, had just started to lay. I got about 4-5 pretty blue eggs, and she stopped. A day or two later, she was singing the egg song. I ran to the hen house, but no blue egg. <scratch, scratch> This scene was repeated several more times, but still no eggs. Finally, as I sat on the porch, engrossed in a good book, she burst forth with a "GA-BWAK!" right under my chair. After I peeled myself off the ceiling, I realized she was going under the porch. I got the flashlight, crawling all the way around the porch in the yard (I’m 73, now) for the full length of the house, hung a right and kept going across the front of the house until the porch ended at the garage. Sure enough, waaay back in the corner was a little clutch of 5 pretty blue eggs. No way I was getting under there, so I hired my neighbors 2 grandsons to go after them. It’s amazing the nasty things boys will do for money. After that, I blocked off where Betty was getting in, and put an end to the problem.
