Straub’s search for colored eggs

Pics
I set every Marans and olive egger egg I have plus a couple from the other girls to get to maximum capacity. 42 eggs total I’m going to need to build some tractors to house these. Some of the Marans eggs are smaller than they should be for the breed Those came from Penny she is almost 2 years old and has always laid this size.

Most of these chicks will eventually be sold but of course I do get first pick if I see any that stand out from the group.

Momma and all 6 babies are doing well. It always amazes me how chicks can run around I cold temperatures when a broody is watching them. It’s 40F outside today and they are all running around eating and drinking cold water. Then they go duck under momma for a couple minutes to warm up. If they were in the house they would need to be at 95 degrees this week. IMG_6005.png

It’s 70f and sunny here today but pretty windy. I opened the door to the grow out pin to see if Smoky was ready to take the babies outside. It took her a little while to get all six out the door but they seem to be enjoying it. I have a feeling I’ll need to help round them up later

Looks like I have a volunteer to watch over the next batch of chicks. I wonder how many chicks a Jersey giant could look after.

That would depend. If she is rather clumsy or in a small nest/space I would not let her have more than 8.
But my Wyandotte sisters raised up to 22 chicks each very successfully.

You have to consider the temperature (winter, spring etc.) as well as she needs to be able to cover and warm all of them for at least 4 weeks.
